What is Bee venom acupuncture?

Bee venom has long been known for its anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects, and has been used since antiquity. Treatment is performed by directly administering bee stings, or by collecting the venom itself and injecting it into the sites of pain after much dilution. Much animal and human research into its treatment effects has been conducted. The bioactive compounds, including many peptides, enzymes, and amines, have gained evidence for treating a variety of diseases, including, most recently, even idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

How does bee venom acupuncture work?

The bee-venom treatment used by Oriental medicine nowadays combines the merits of the pharmaceutical effect of bee venom with the distribution of the meridians. It is an upgrade of the simple use of bee venom in Western medicine, by injecting it on acupoints and meridians, where circulation of qi is maximized.

Bee-venom treatment works by affecting the body with the effects of acupuncture as well as moxibustion, thus circulating qi smoothly. In Western medical view, the 40 or so components in bee venom, such as melitin, apamine, phospholipase, mastcell degranulation peptide, and adolapin works on the pituitary gland and adrenal cortical hormone to speed up metabolism and get rid of inflammation and pain, as well as strengthening the immune system. Therefore, bee-venom treatment is a typical "neo-medicine" that combines Eastern/Western medicine.

Bee-venom treatment is generally used for illnesses of the back muscle and disc, arthritis of the knees, frozen shouler, and many other painful symptoms. The concentration is adjusted according to the state of the patient through Oriental medical examination. The drug is injected on acupoints roughly twice a week, 15 times.

In our hospital, we are achieving a recovery rate of more than 80% with bee-venom treatment on herniated intervertebral disc and degenerative arthritis patients. Itching and swelling, or symptoms of common cold can occur for two to three days following the treatment due to imbalance of energy, which is the result of acceleration of the immune system in spleen and marrows, in the course of strengthening it. The adverse event is a transient happening and will go away in a short while. 3~4 cases in a hundred thousand can lead to severe allergic reaction, but bee-venom treatment is administered after a careful examination and history taking by a trained doctor, therefore it is a very safe method of healing.
